This was the map we looked at in class on Thursday. Each country has had its shape altered dependin upon the proportion of people who live on less than the equivalent of $2 per day, known as 'absolute poverty'.

How would you describe the distibution (how spread out something is) of people living in absolute poverty across the world?

  1. Yay- first comment!!!

First of all, I think this map is quite an intersting way of showing information and is really good for comparing absolute poverty in different countries; it is very clear and shows how big the differences are between countries.

I think that the distribution of people living in absolute poverty across the world seems to be that continents like Europe and America have the least amount of poverty, whereas continents like Africa and Asia (which I think are the more over-populated areas) seem to have the most. Also, the countries with the most amount of poverty are close together, which makes it look like countries are almost grouped together based on their poverty levels.

  2. Yipeeee.. SECOND!! :') (1st the WORST, 2nd the BEST)

I agree with Sophie, in that the distribution of people living in absolute poverty is mainly on the west side of this map, in continents such as Africa and Asia! It also shows that Europe, Australia and North America are hardly existent on this map as they don't have many people who are living in absolute poverty.

I think this map is very useful and helps shows the comparisons between the different countries. It is also very easy to read (if you know what I mean?)

  3. This Map Shows that The west (such as Asia and Africa) are living in poverty and is probably because they are less developed countries (LEDC'S)as they are shown large. However,Places such as Europe and North America, you can hardly see which shows not many people live in poverty because they are more developed countries (MEDC's).
Overall this map shows that the west is in more poverty than the east.

  4. I think this map is very interesting. It is shocking how many people are living in absolute poverty and in which countries...

On the map, countries such as India are really BIG compared to most of Europe which is really tiny. That's because countries such as the UK are more developed countries and have more advanced economies compared to other countries, like china and some parts of Africa. Most of the countries with people who are living in absolute poverty are on the Eastern side of the map.

Overall, I think it's a really good map and it's clear what it shows. It holds oodles of information, but it might be better if it had countries or continents names on it, just to make it extra clear.

  5. 5th comment yay :D

Umm well i think this picture shows a lot about how the world hierachy takes place that europe is well developed and should be helping the other countries that are humoungous on the map. but that will never happen because the world will never be at peace. I feel sorry for india and i think it's china because they are basically in the absoloute poverty section and it's not looking good for them even though everything says 'made in china'

I think it kinda looks like a butterfly going to a flower, the most surprising thing is africa is marginally smaller than indaia and china, i think i thought this weird as you here all the reports about bad sanition in africa then you see all the good bits of asia not seeing the bad bits.

Overall i think it's a very useful map :D with lots of things to discuss about it.

  6. I think that this map is a really good way of showing how massive the difference in between the development in the west is, compared to eastern countries. Like Zoe, I think that I was a little short-sighted, as I assumed that because most anti-poverty charity work is based in Africa, poverty wasn't so much of a problem everywhere else. This map shows just how wrong I was, and that compared to India, they aren't doing to badly. On the other hand, compared to other countries like the US, UK and Australia, there is a HUGE percentage of people in absolute poverty.
I think that the largest countries seem to be the ones where lots of natural disasters occur, or where a country is at war, which shows just how much these factors affect the development of a country. I also noticed that the majority of the countries with a large percentage of people in absolute poverty are surrounding the equator. Not sure how this affects this but...
sorry this is so late, this is the first time i have been able to see the post,
