Hurricane Wilma

A video we will use in the lesson today - Hurricane Wilma!

Why we need explorers!

This is the video I mentioned in the lesson today - its really good and shows the ways in which you should never stop learning because you never know when you will discover the next 'big thing'.
Enjoy

Earthquake in Nepal and India!

An earthquake struck India and Nepal the other day - the very place of Mt Everest - that we are told in the Richard Hammond show that is still moving. What more proof do you need?

One of the biggest issues in this remote area is how they will get relief aid to the people affected. Of the examples we have looked at before, this is the first where the earthquake has hit a poor country and in the countryside. The time delays that result from having to air lift relief aid into these areas is often one of the largest contributing factor to large death tolls.

This is also a clear example of what we call 'secondary effects' such as the mudslides. Secondary effects are caused by the main hazard/disaster and then lead to lots of other impacts, often contributing to the death of even more people.

Year 9 video part 8 of 8

OK - so now you have seen all of the Richard Hammond show on 'Journey to the centre of the planet' you all need to comment on the topic. The question I would  like you to consider and reply to (in detail), is what do you think you learnt most from watching this video (in relation to Earth Structure).

I look forward to reading your comments.
Happy Sunday everyone

I really am too kind to some of you!

One for my Year 7 students......Earth structure!

This is an interesting introduction to the structure of the Earth - no credit due to me, I just found and posted it. Big thanks to the person who actually made this.

Panorama on Tsunami Survivors

The most recent Panorama episode was on the survivors tale from the Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan.

Very much worth a watch:

Conflict Continuum

Just had a look at this fantastic Prezi presentation about the possibility of a continuum of conflict. This really should be a must read for all A-Level students.

This is a seriously good bit of presentation kit and is far better than the old Power-Point. I would strongly urge Y12/13 and Uni students to get familiar with this kit - excellent revision note potential plus much much more.

I'd be really interested in seeing what some of you think about the presentation, please leave a comment on the board here - what do you think about the software and the topic matter!

Canadian Earthquake in the last few minutes

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Vancouver Island, shaking buildings in the Canadian city, but there are no immediate signs of damage.

Key question for Geographers would seem to be - How was there so little damage initially? What precautions have the Canadians put in place?

try again!

Hurricane Irene

A few days old now but this is an excellent account (including the visuals of a video) on the impact of Hurricanes, particularly via the storm surge.

Preserving the UK's oceans

Interesting article on plans to protect the UK's coastline. This links well to the GCSE 'coasts' unit as well as 'tourism' and could be a useful link to the A2 Contemporary Conflicts unit.

Natural Hazards in 2011 video

Just getting the hang of this blogging thing - this is the video without having to follow the link.
I will just need to keep getting better at this - slowly but surely.

Welcome to my new blog!

Welcome to my blog. This is an opportunity for those of you who want to find out more about what is happening in the world that is linked to the Geography courses that I teach (GCSE and A Level).

To start with, I found this video on YouTube really eye opening about how natural hazards have been a real part of the year so far.
