Year 9 video part 8 of 8

OK - so now you have seen all of the Richard Hammond show on 'Journey to the centre of the planet' you all need to comment on the topic. The question I would  like you to consider and reply to (in detail), is what do you think you learnt most from watching this video (in relation to Earth Structure).

I look forward to reading your comments.
Happy Sunday everyone

  1. YAY.. again! First comment.. :)

What do you think you have learn't most from watching this video (in relation to Earth Structure)..?

Umm... In relation to the earth's structure, I have learn't, and honestly shocked by, the whole process of the earths core! I was surprised that all the earthquakes, all the volcanoes and all the never-ending movement of land, is all powered by the core, a giant ball of solid metal which is at least 6,000 degrees (the temperature of the sun's surface!) I also learnt that in 250 million years all the world's land mass will have joined together to create, theoretically, a giant land! Too bad none of us will be alive to see that!

  2. I agree Becci, its one of the reasons I love teaching this unit and why it was so easy for the group to get me chatting about it so much on Thursday. It is a fascinating subject and one that really gets the imagination working. Our lives feel so very long but in reality they are but fleeting moments. Hopefully you have a better appreciation of why we have Volcanoes and Earthquakes now. Its just incredible.

  3. I learnt that the crust is only 45 miles thick, which really shocked me as I didn’t know it was that thin and to think we have only gone down 2 miles into the crust. Also that if it wasn’t for the core of the earth then we wouldn’t have earthquakes or volcanoes. But then we wouldn’t have all our hills and landscapes so I think the world would be pretty dull if it wasn’t for the core moving the plates of the earth to help make our world what it is now.

  4. Welcome on board Rosie!

It is staggering to think that the crust is only 45miles thick (and a lot lot thinner than that in some places). That is about the distance from Didcot to Southampton!

Well done on making your first comment such a good one.

  5. Hi! First of all, WOW!!! That video was amazing- I loved watching this so please set another homework like this again!
I think that the most amazing things I learnt about were the underwater caves and tunnels in Florida. I never knew that there were these amazing places under the ground that people just walk across without even knowing. I really want to find out more about these. I also really enjoyed watching the clips about Nyiragongo volcano and the football stadium in America that they were cutting in half to make it safer in an earthquake! By Sophie P

  6. For the homework side for answering the question i think i have learnt that volcanoes can start from anywhere in the planet (depth) not just on the surface and it's weird to think the world keeps changing with every earthquake. I loved the different aspects of how earthquakes affect American footballers underwater caves...
(wouldnt mind a homework like this again..)

  7. I learnt that the crust is only 45 miles thick, what i didn't know, and also we only gone 2 mines down into the earth's crust.i didn't realise there's 13 block parts of the crust what cover earth. If there was no crust no earthquakes or volcanoes would happen and the earth would be totally different to how it is now

  8. I have learnt that the earth's core causes alot of distruction and movement of the earth and that the mountins will keep on growing because of this. Also that the core is as hot as the surface of the sun 6,000 degrees. I found it interesting that one day the earth will just be one giant continent.

  9. I have learnt that the earths crust is only 45 miles thick which shocked me also that volcanoes can start from any depth in the world. I thought it was really intresting that in 250 million years all the worlds land will have joined together to make a super-continent.

  10. I found the whole video intresting and I learnt alot about the earth's structure. The most intresting thing was the magnetic feild and how it protects the earth from atoms and similar objects. I was suprised to hear that turtles nevagate using the magnetic feild and I found the infomation about it very intresting. I thought the man who went up right near that volcano's centre was a bit stupid, luckily he wasn't hurt. Another intresting point was the height of the volcano, 2 miles is pretty high considering the earth's crust is only 45 miles thick. The underwater caves in America was really intresting and it was funny that they had to go through the shop to continue walking above the swimmer. I learnt other things too, all of the video was very intresting :)

  11. WOW! That was a really interesting video! Great effects! I really enjoyed watching it and I have learnt lots. For example, I now know that the giant ball of metal, (The Inner Core), is almost as big as the moon and it is as hot as the surface of the sun!! I have also learnt that the Outer Core, (between 4,000 and 6,000 degrees centigrade), creates a enormous magnetic field. We can see this in the Northern Lights, when the sun throws out billions of charged atomic particles. The Northern lights deflects these and when it starts to interact with our atmosphere we can see the Northern Lights. Clever! Imogen

  12. I found the video very intriguing and thought that it was all very interesting. I thought the fact turtles relied on the earths magnetic field was intresting and something new I had learned.
I also found out that the earths crust is only 45 miles thick which i thought was quite scary as you can travel more than that in about 1/2 an hour in a car.
I also thought that the under water caves was amazing and that it was funny that they had to walk through a shop to follow them.
(I also wouldn't mind another homework like this again)

  13. I mean WOW just WOW these video's are amazing i cant believe that the earth is so unstable you wouldn't think it- it's kinda of like the earth is the one dependable stable thing in your life that will never fail you, but you watch this video and you think about how we are really lucky where we live that we don't have to deal with anything. Then I saw the underwater caves in Florida and was just amazed- a network of underwater tunnels and caves all full of fresh water. And the fact that the earth's core is the heat of the sun and I keep moaning about how cold it is!
I really enjoyed this homework because I was able to watch the videos bit by bit.

  14. This video was fasinating, my whole family ended up watching it.Its really cool that in some places like Florida they have underground water caves, made by the cracks in the eaths crust.I also did'nt know what the inside of an active volcanoe looked like. This video was really informative and i really enjoyed this homework.By Tasnia Khan :)

  15. Things that I
    learnt about were the underwater
caves and how the earths crust is only 45 miles deep and yet we've only dug 2! I never
knew that there were loads of underground places. I really want to find out
more about these . I learnt that without the earths core we wouldnt have earthquakes wich really suprised me! I loved watching this video it was so fascinating to watch.

  16. I learnt about the structure of the earth and that the crust is only 45 miles deep. I also learnt that without a crust to the earth, no volcanoes or earthquakes would exist.I thought it was really interesting that in 250 million years all the land on the earth will collide together to make one big super-continent. I found all the videos interesting, and easy to understand. Eleanor Peers. :)

  17. What do you think you learnt most from watching this video?
I have learnt that the ground moves quite a lot all the time, the inner core is a giant ball of metal and the outer call is up to 6,000 degrees celcius, that is very hot!! It was very intresting to find about all the things about are earth, amazing!

  18. What do you've learnt watching this video?
I've learnt that it’s pretty amazing to think that what is under our feet is layers of underground wires, rock, water, and how the world is split between fourteen huge sections that are the tectonic plates. The fact that these plates are moving when we least expect it or feel it is incredible. When scientists are discovering all types of research that makes our world what it is, and when the earth can cause destructions such as earthquakes. This shows that there is plenty more out there that scientists can find out about our world and the changes that can affect us. The earth’s core is very hot and is as hot as the sun, and is nearly as big as the moon.

When they are diving down to the aquifer it is unimaginable as it stretches for hundreds of feet away to the aquifer itself, and then they find each other again. The fact that mountains contain fossils of sea creatures, and when the mountain is above from the sea, where the fossils are is interesting. As the mountain had probably developed through the years to reach ground level and reaching land. That is now on a different landscape and environment, is fascinating as the mountains still keep growing. The Nyiragongo volcano is this massive volcano that larks in Africa, and is fierce volcano with lava that flows up to speeds of over sixty miles per hour. Which contains extremely hot lava and is eight hundred degrees centigrade. The northern lights are beautiful, and the little turtles are so cute. These series of videos were very interesting with extraordinary pictures too. By Alyssa Barcelona!

  19. After watching this 8 part video I feel that I have learnt alot about the earth's structure and more! So here is what I have learned!: :)
I learned about Sinkholes because I had never heard of them before.
I learnt so much more about volcanoes and how the lava/magma comes from underground into the volcano.
I learnt that the inner core is around 3000 miles below us, and that it is around 6000 degrees.
I was very surprised at how thin the crust really is, I was expecting it to be so much thicker than 45 miles!

    That's what i learned!:)

  20. i found this whole video really intresting. i was fascinated by how earthquakes, volcanoes and the earths crust generally moving is all down to the inner core which is 3,ooo miles below us. i also thought that it was intresting how the underwater caves in florida were made by the earths crust moving and thats now where people there get most of there drinking water from!
